Three Top Tips For Packing and Moving House
23rd March 2019
Spring is here, meaning we’re now in the busiest period of the year for buying and selling houses. Although this can be exciting, the actual process of packing up your belongings and moving these to a new home can be incredibly stressful.
Our best advice is to make sure you’ve got a plan, and then pack early. Not only will this keep your stress levels at bay, but it also means you’re less likely to forget any important tasks that should have been done in advance to moving day.
However, if you’re new to moving, or want to make sure you’ve got everything right, we’ve got some top tips for you:
Declutter – Decluttering is the first step to having a truly organised home. Make three piles whilst you sort; keep, bin and sell. This way you can sort all your belongings into what necessities you need to keep with you during the move, what can be packed away and forgotten about until you’re in your new home and which items you really don’t need anymore.
When you begin to declutter, clear the room you use least first as once this room is packed up, it can then be used for storage for pre-packed boxes.
Packing – Make sure you don’t just throw everything into the box and shove it away ready for move. You want to ensure no boxes are overloaded, and they’re all labelled correctly with the contents inside and the room destination. This way your move will run a lot smoother, and the unpacking won’t be as difficult.
Prepare – Make sure you’ve prepared which items you need most and pack away all-important documentation separately. You never know when you may need it during the move and if it’s hidden at the bottom of a box and you have no recollection of which box that actually is, it may cause some problems. You should also have a change of clothes for everybody for moving day, basic toiletries, a first aid kit and a tool kit to hand as these will be the necessities that you don’t want to be stuck searching for.
When you finally arrive at your new home, don’t rush to get everything unpacked and stored away. You will have had an incredibly busy, and perhaps stressful day and so you need time to relax and enjoy your first night in your new home properly. If you’ve packed the right essentials in a separate bag, you won’t need to make a mess opening all your boxes just yet.
